Cooperative & Homeowners Association Law Firm

FIRM SPOTLIGHT: MELISSA B. SCHLACTUS, ESQ.

This July, I had the opportunity to attend the annual summer meeting of the New York State Bar Association Real Property Law Section.  Although the New York State Bar Association is an organization for New York attorneys, this year the meeting was held in Manchester, Vermont.  The spectacular views of the Green Mountains made for a beautiful setting for the meeting.

The summer meeting provides New York attorneys, whose practices focus on real estate matters, the opportunity to network with other real estate attorneys from across New York State.  Educational seminars are held focusing on significant issues in the area of real estate law, and included a seminar on the latest issues in the field of condominium, co-op, and HOA law.

One highlight from the seminar was that the Bar Association arranged for the ethics class to be held at the courthouse located across the street from the hotel where the seminar was located. The Bennington County Courthouse was built in 1822 and has the distinction of being Vermont’s oldest functioning county courthouse.  All seventy-five attorneys attending the seminar marched across the street and filled the one room courthouse.  This little field trip made everyone enjoy the last class of the day a little more.

This was the first time I attended the annual summer meeting, but hopefully not the last.  Many of the attorneys I met attend the seminar every year. I look forward to continuing to build relationships with them.  And in keeping with the apparent tradition of not holding the seminar in New York, it was announced that next year’s summer meeting will be held in Montreal.
